Updated Research On Caregiving In The U.S.

The first national profile of caregivers was Caregiving in the US, published in 1997. The study was updated in 2004.

In 2009, the National Alliance for Caregiving in collaboration with the AARP completed the most comprehensive examination to date of caregiving in America.

Many of the findings will be of particular interest to employers of every size.

The 2009 study, funded by The MetLife Foundation, reveals that:

29% of the U.S. adult population are caregivers.
On average, they provide 20 hours of care per week.
Of those 65.7 million people, approximately three-fourths of caregivers are or were working while providing care.
That there has been an increase in the proportion of those working caregivers who say they have had to make a workplace accommodation because of caregiving.
